Up Close
Chitosan is a nitrogenous polysaccharide derived from the shells of sea
creatures such as crabs and lobsters. Molecularly, it resembles the structure
of fibre and taking it will give you the same colon-cleansing benefit of
eating a high fibre meal. More importantly, it has the medicinal property
of lowering cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood (American Journal
of Clinical Nutrition).
By hindering the absorption of fats and sterols in the intestines, Chitosan
can be used as a slimming aid to keep unsightly flab in check. This can
be explained as follows: the fats you consume in your food is negatively
charged. In acid media, Chitosan becomes positively charged and absorbs up
to 400 percent of its weight in water to form a gel. Once gelled, Chitosan can
encapsulate over four times its own weight of negatively charged dietary
lipids and thus prevent these lipids, including cholesterol, from being
absorbed by the body. The trapped fat is then passed through the large intestine
and excreted through normal bowel movement. Comparing with other fibres,
the effect of Chitosan on lipid excretion is up to 12 times greater than
any other natural fibre.
For those who can't resist the temptation of delicious deep fried or
fast food, yet worry about the fats they contain, the health benefits of
Chitosan are certainly promising.
