Protein Linkage is the first sign of red cell stickiness which may progress into rouleau if not corrected. This condition may indicate that the body is having a difficult time digesting the protein it has ingested. (What did you eat prior to the test)?

Rouleau is a roll of red blood cells resembling a pile of coins. It becomes obvious that the surface of the red blood cells is greatly reduced with this type of condition. As such, the transportation of oxygen is drastically hindered. Symptoms are fatigue, poor digestion, and possible edema.

Erythrocyte aggregation is the clumping together of the red blood cells. There is a restriction in the flow of oxygen and a flow of blood through the capillaries. These masses of red blood cells may become large enough to form a blood clot if not unchecked. High concentrations of undigested fats and lipoproteins have been associated with increases in aggregation.

Target cells are red blood cells which are thinner than normal with an enlarged center, and often with a black dot in the center. It has been suggested that the red blood cells are missing iron, therefore, missing adequate hemoglobin and unable to carry oxygen and potential energy. They are also seen in cases of obstructive jaundice and hypochromic anemia.

Microcytes are small red blood cells having a diameter of less than 5 microns. These red blood cells usually contain less hemoglobin than normal cells and thus have a decreased cell volume. Microcytes are frequently seen with iron deficiency anemia.

Macrocytes are large red blood cells greater than 10 microns. (The average red blood cell is 7.2 microns). These cells are found in great numbers with hemolytic anemia.
