The Coming Plague The Plague of the 21st Century We take our health for granted. We send our children off to school knowing they will get winter colds, perhaps the flu, but we do not panic. We fly around the world on business and pleasure, uncomfortable when a person next to us coughs or wheezes, but we do not demand a change of seats. We pull off the interstate at a moment's notice and scarf down lunch at a truck stop without fear that the chef's hands might be dirty, or the waitress might be sick. We drink from water fountains in a thousand malls and offices and mini marts, confident that the water systems of America have purified our drinking water. Over the last half a century, we have brought infectious disease to its knees and built a fortress of public health in the United States. A powerful combination of high-tech miracle medicines, rigorous surveillance of epidemic outbreaks and government regulations to clean our waters, drain our swamps, oversee our food supply and vaccinate our children. But is it possible that with all of our expensive and sophisticated efforts to make ourselves safe from infectious disease, we have actually laid the foundations for new epidemics? Reports published this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association reveal there are 58 percent more cases of infectious disease this year than in 1990. The trend is dramatically upward, and the best scientific brains in the world tell us that it is going to get worse before it gets better. As we approach the 21st century, we must prepare to do battle with new epidemics of unknown origins, as well as cope once more with diseases we had thought vanquished.
